This is one of those weeks in which I feel I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off, yet there’s nothing much to say about it in my update! With my new job (with strange hours) ramping up, I feel over-committed to family, friends, and volunteer work so that I have very little free-time for myself. I ended up having to borrow free time, missing two events last week. But I’ve now rearranged certain aspects of my schedule – hopefully that will help.
I am sadly behind on my book reviews, but I have penciled into my calendar to write a review for The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm on Tuesday and Why Zebras Don’t Have Ulcers on Thursday. We’ll see if proactively planning my reviews gets me caught up!
The activity my blog HAS seen this week is that I decided to organize a full Bible Group Read through the year 2017. I already have a group interested on LibraryThing, if you prefer that venue. Or if you would like to casually or all-out join me reading / blogging about the Bible next year, let me know!
This week I completed To Kill a Mockingbird, and I loved it. Though the ending made me laugh because it reminded me of when my mom told me “I didn’t understand that book…” When I got to the ending I understood why. lol. Mom. So literal.
In light of my new plan to read the Bible, I decided to read some preparatory non-fiction. I’ve temporarily set aside The Myth of Sisyphus, which I started last week. Also, The Fifth Child won last week’s vote, so that’s what I’ll be reading for Halloween. This week I’m reading How to Read the Bible, by James L Kugel, Stiletto, by Daniel O’Malley, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, by J. K. Rowling.

Being too busy to do all the things we want to do is such a pervasive issue for some of us. I think that it is so admirable that you manage to still give time to your volunteer efforts.
I highly recommend Jesus and Yahweh: The Names Divine by Harold Bloom as a great Bible related read. Bloom is opinionated and I do not always agree with him, but is take on the Old Testaments is unique and thought provoking. I find his theory that the original version of the First Five Books of the Old Testament were written by a Noblewoman who was part of King Solomon's Court, intriguing.

I had started To Kill a Mockingbird, but I don't think I even got halfway through the book. I got bored with it.

Thanks for the suggestion Brian, I'll put it on my list. I was hoping I'd have time to finish The Art of Biblical Narrative as well as How to Read the Bible before I start my bible study, but I'll see if I can squeeze Jesus and Yahweh in afterwards.

Yeah, of course everyone in my life is like “why are you going to your volunteer shift in the middle of a Sunday?!” but it was the only time that works with my new schedule. Hopefully this change-up will have a good impact on my life. 🙂

I only read To Kill A Mockingbird this past year too for the first time. I had seen the movie several times, and I thought I had read the book, but I was wrong. I enjoyed it, just as much as the movie. The movie was pretty faithful to the book.

I can sympathise with your sense of being overwhelmed and restructuring your time is a really practical, sensible response. We all need time for ourselves… Your project to read The Bible sounds fascinating. Which version of The Bible are you planning to use?

I read To Kill a Mockingbird years ago in high school, but to honest I don't remember it all too well – I think I've tried to block out all those memories of high school book reports and reading tests! 😛 I love being busy too, but sometimes something just has to give – there are only so many hours in the day, unfortunately!!

I have 5 bibles, it turns out, each a different version. I think I will go with the ESV, though, since it is my Literary Study Bible. I might peek through the others and see how they compare in places, though. I'm curious which translation speaks to me the best.
